Event Details

Post-Soviet politics expert Dr. Erin Baumann will brief Democrats Abroad on the current crisis in the Ukraine on Thursday, March 20th at the Arlington Hotel at O'Connell Bridge, City Centre Dublin. The evolving situation was highlighted on Tuesday when Russian President Vladimir Putin annexed Crimea in short order after a referendum vote held on Sunday in which Crimea seceded from Ukraine. The US, the EU, and the interim government in the Ukraine have been united in declaring the referendum illegal, and have moved quickly to enact economic and travel sanctions on a number of Russian officials. Dr. Baumann will address the highly fluid situation and what might happen next in the crisis. Among issues addressed will be the relevance of the 1994 agreement between Russia and the US guaranteeing Ukraine's territorial integrity in exchange for giving up it's nuclear arsenal, the EU Association agreement being offered to Ukraine, and whether Putin has an endgame, or was this an emotional response to the Ukraine taking steps to move closer to the EU. The briefing is organised for the members of DA Ireland, but is free and open to all.

Democrats Abroad is proud to have Dr. Erin Baumann brief us on these questions and more this coming Thursday, March 20th. Dr. Baumann is a Lecturer in the School of Politics and International Relations at University College Dublin. Before receiving her PhD from UCD in 2013, Erin worked in the energy industry in Washington DC and studied for her BA at the Elliott School of International Affairs at The George Washington University. Erin's particular expertise is in foreign policy analysis and the politics of post-Soviet states.  In 2010 she was a visiting research fellow at Belarusian State University and in 2011 she held a fellowship at National University of Kyiv – Mohyla Academy, Ukraine.

We highly recommend reserving your place now to ensure you are not denied a seat on what will be a fascinating briefing on the future of the Ukraine, US-Russian relations, and the future of the EU.

Democrats Abroad Ireland

Democrats Abroad Ireland are a diverse group of US citizens from many backgrounds - American-born, Irish returned emigrants from the US, and people from elsewhere - working towards the election of Democratic candidates.

We engage in voter registration, fundraising, phone-banking, and other strategies to strengthen the Democratic party.  We meet monthly to plan, encourage voter registration, and discuss topics of the day.  And we have quite a bit of fun along the way too.

If you are an American citizen, you're welcome to join us! First - register to vote at, and second - join Democrats Abroad!
