Event description

Description

Callanan’s Bar on Georges Quay, Cork, was built c.1905 and is an almost unique survivor of a typical Edwardian public house. However, the majority of the building is much older, perhaps dating to the 1780s. The pub was built as the ‘Carrigaline Bar’ and was owned by Murphy’s Brewery and for many years could only sell its produce; it was one of Cork’s hundreds of ‘tied houses’. It has been managed by the same family since the 1935 and retains many original features, including: century-old tables, a snug and attractive mirrored ‘back bar’. This event will consist of a short talk (with slides) dealing with the history of the development of the area, the architectural features of some local buildings and especially of the pub, and conclude with the showing of some short films of Edwardian Cork. Participation is limited to 35 people, first come first served and strictly over 18.
