Cork Public Museum commemorates their 75th Anniversary with a new online exhibition by University College Cork MA Museum Studies students.

About this event

Cork Public Museum celebrates their 75th anniversary with a new exhibition, ‘Curating Cork: 75 Years of CPM’. This is a collaborative project with the MA Museum Studies class of 2021 at University College Cork, opening Thursday 10 June on Cork Public Museum’s website.

Featuring never before seen objects from the museum’s collection, this new exhibition commemorates the fascinating history and development of Cork Public Museum, the oldest local authority museum in Ireland.

The story of Cork Public Museum is one of progress and passion for promoting Cork’s heritage. This exhibition delves into the museum’s development, from the early struggle to establish a city museum, to the collaborative effort of opening Cork Public Museum in 1945, and the growth of the museum through its five curators.

The exhibition showcases this history alongside seventeen diverse objects from within CPM’s collection, which were carefully selected to reflect the different stages of the museum’s development and the unique interests and curatorial approaches of its curators. Explore the fascinating relationship between people and objects that have shaped Cork Public Museum and its collections over the past 75 years.

Deirbhile Lynch, MA Museum Studies student, said:

“The exhibition is inspiring for other museums to also unveil their development, the highs and lows. Every moment has its importance.”

Dr Griffin Murray, Lecturer on the MA in Museum Studies Programme, University College Cork, said:

“The museum has a fascinating history that is not well known. In this exhibition the students have uncovered many stories and objects, most of which have never been seen by the public before. The exhibition tells the story not only of Cork Public Museum, but how Irish society has radically changed over the last 75 years. The students are to be congratulated in putting together this exhibition during a global pandemic, which meant that all their classes had to be online. This was challenging for them, but it is humbling to think that the museum itself was opened in 1945 during the 'Emergency' and the background of World War 2.”
