Get on your bike with our motivating (yet achievable) cycling challenge!

About this Event

Monaghan Sports Partnership invites you to take part in our new 'Cycle Monaghan' virtual Cycling Challenge which encourages you to build up a healthy habit of cycling short distances (from your house and within current Government / HSE travel Guidelines of 5km radius)

Just complete small blocks of cycling (eg 2-5km up to 3 times per week) until you have completed the full distance of 110kms.

Keep a record on our progress tracker (which will be emailed to you) and please send us some photos of your progress along the way or images of you out cycling (you can send them by private message or post them to your Facebook page and tag us @monaghansports

Things to remember:

Can I cycle?

• Are you well enough to be able to cycle a short distance from your house?

• Is it safe to do so in the area you wish to cycle?

• Do you know how to use the bike? (If you are borrowing one from a family member within your household)

• Please only cycle within distances recommended by current HSE / Government guidelines

• Is your bike in good working order? Check out the next section below

Is your bike ready?

• Check that your bike is in good working order - see the ‘M’ check on

• Make sure that tyre pressure is good, that handlebars and seat are secure, that brakes are working well and that you have lights on your bike

• Check that wheels are secure and all bolts tight

Cycling safely –

• Adhere to the normal rules of the road when cycling and observe ‘Yield’ or ‘Stop’ signs and be aware of junctions and hidden entrances

• Practice social distancing – (while Covid19 advice is still in place)

• Be seen - Wear bright coloured clothing or ideally, hi-viz clothing

• Be safe – Make sure lights are working and you are wearing a helmet

• Be prepared – have your charged mobile phone with you

• Children should always cycle under adult supervision and wear a helmet at all times

Adhere to current good practice –

• While cycling, visits to public places for non-essential purposes (eg shops, etc) should be avoided

• Keep a minimum 2metre distance from other pedestrians or cyclists

• Practice coughing and sneezing etiquette, using a tissue or into the elbow if you do not have a tissue and wash hands immediately on return from cycle -

• Clean down handlebars and seat of bike

• Dispose of all used tissues / cleaning wipes etc in the bin

To take part in this challenge :

• Register here

• All registered participants will receive a progress tracker – to track the dates and distance you cycle each week until you complete your chosen challenge!

• All registered participants will be entered into a prize draw for a new bicycle*

• This cycle challenge is open for registration from Monday 18th May until 14th June and the challenge must be completed by 31st August 2020, giving you adequate time to complete the full distance (allowing for approx. 3 cycles per week within current distances allowed)
