Description

The Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering, Trinity College Dublin in partnership with Dublin City Council, are proud to host one of the first events of the four-day international cycling conference, Velo-City 2019.

The seminar, Cycling towards a low carbon future, will feature three of the most prominent international cycling academics and advocates presenting findings on how to promote and support cycling. The session will be held in the Graduate Memorial Building, Trinity College Dublin. The seminar is part of the wider conference programme and tickets for the conference can be purchased on the official Velo-City 2019 website.

Dick Brady, Assistant Chief Executive, Environment and Transportation Department, Dublin City Council will start proceedings with some introductory remarks on cycling and the Velo-city conference.

Rachel Aldred, Reader, University of Westminster, “Outer London’s ‘mini-Holland’ schemes: impacts on active travel behaviour and attitudes

Maud de Vries, Co-founder & Managing Director www.bycs.org, “Where can the bicycle take us?”

Marie Kåstrup, Head of Bicycle Program, City of Copenhagen, Vice Chair Cycling Embassy of Denmark, “As easy as brushing your teeth – how cycling became mass transportation in Copenhagen”

Following the seminar, we will host a reception serving drinks and light refreshments. The reception is kindly sponsored by AECOM.

Speaker bios

Dr Rachel Aldred

Rachel Aldred is Reader in Transport and specialises in active travel. She has published over 25 peer-reviewed articles on topics including injury risk, near misses, perceived safety, equity in participation, and infrastructure and uptake. In 2016 she was awarded the ESRC Prize for Outstanding Impact in Public Policy.

Marie Kåstrup

ead of Copenhagen City’s Bicycle Program and the vice chair of the Cycling Embassy of Denmark, Marie is passionate about disseminating best practice about cycling planning around the world. Every year, the City of Copenhagen receives 50-70 international delegations interested in the local bicycle solutions. Apart from meeting with delegations and journalists on a frequent basis, Marie is also an experienced lecturer and has presented at 8-80 seminars, C40 network webinars, the Danish and Swedish national bicycle conferences, the Cycling and Society Research Group Seminar, Transport and Environment’s Truck Safety Conference, the Danish Bridge Conference, Accell Group’s business innovation seminar, chairing OECD’s International Transport Forum's roundtable on cycling safety, and presentations at eight Velo-city conferences 2009-2018.
