Description

Irish Sign Language interpreted tour for 100th Anniversary of Dáil Éireann.

Dáil Éireann held its first public meeting in the Round Room of Dublin’s Mansion House on the 21 January 1919. It was a brave and defiant move coming six weeks after the December 1918 general election where 69 of the 101 successful candidates were pro-independence. All elected members were invited to attend that first meeting but given the complicated political landscape of the time not all could or would show up. On the day 27 members were present in the Mansion House and those members wasted no time in getting down to work. They declared Irish independence, sought international recognition for Ireland’s freedom, and set about the process of building a State.

The work of Dáil Éireann has changed and developed in many ways since those early days. As we prepare to celebrate its 100th anniversary we know that Dáil Éireann never lost sight of its guiding principles; rather it has continually adapted to keep abreast of the many new challenges it has faced throughout the following ten decades.

To mark this significant milestone, the Houses of the Oireachtas are organising a tour and exhibition in Leinster House and a separate tour of 6 Harcourt Street, the headquarters used to organise Sinn Féin’s landslide victory in the 1918 General Election.

From the first public sitting in the Round Room of the Mansion House in January 1919 to the 100 year commemoration in the 2019, visitors will be shown the ‘then and now’ of Dáil Éireann as we pose the question ‘Did you know?’ about how legislation and Parliamentary activity has affected Irish society through the years.

This story will be told through a dedicated tour from ushers, featuring theatrical performances, interactive timelines, a photographic exhibition and important exhibits related to Dáil Éireann.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to learn about the importance of the 1918 general election result, the drive for self-determination and how the administration planned for the first public meeting of Dáil Éireann 100 years ago.

Places on the Dáil100 Experience must be booked in advance. For more information on Dáil 100 please see www.dail100.ie.
