This workshop aims to help therapists develop a trauma-informed approach to client work

About this Event

Working with the often confusing and challenging aspects of trauma can leave therapists feeling baffled and de-skilled. Presented by Patricia Allen-Garrett BSc (Hons) Psychology, Dip Counselling & Psychotherapy) this 2 day workshop will introduce the central principles of trauma-informed practice which will both support the therapy model the therapist currently works from and develop confidence in relation to working with clients presenting with trauma. Combining current research in trauma, experiential exercises, skills practice and taking a somatic approach, the workshop will explore some of trauma’s neurological aspects as well as developing familiarity with interventions that address these aspects and help in trauma work. Each aspect will aid the practitioner develop their trauma toolkit.

Course Content

• Become aware of the key components, sources & symptoms of psychological trauma;

• Learn about the importance of regulation (before moving to process traumatic experiences), and how to use it in therapy;

• Understand the Fight/Flight/Freeze responses;

• Learn about the three phase/stage approach to working with trauma and the therapist’s role in each;

• Gain an appreciation of trauma’s brain-body link & the relevance of a somatic/body-based approach to working with it;

• Recognise some dynamics of attachment trauma;

• Understand the importance of the therapeutic relationship using a polyvagal lens

Learn some stage-specific practical skills and interventions to help in your work to:

o Help clients expand their window of tolerance and learn to regulate

o Bring a client back from a hypo/hyperaroused state

o Help clients identify their feelings and behaviours

o Start to process traumatic memories using the body

o Help clients develop their resources and re-orientate towards and appreciate their strengths;

o Begin to integrate their experiences and make meaning of their trauma.
