Under the CHILD CARE ACT 1991 (EARLY YEARS SERVICES) REGULATIONS 2016, SCHEDULE 5 (Page 44 [221]) providers are required to develop an “Inclusion Policy” as follows:

1. (h) inclusion policy specifying— “inclusion policy”, in relation to a pre-school service, means a policy specifying the manner in which it is ensured that the needs (including the physical, emotional and intellectual needs and the religious beliefs (if any)) of all preschool children attending the service are addressed in the service

This training guides services through the underlying principles of the DCYA Inclusion Charter which underpins the Diversity, Equality and Inclusion Guidelines for Early Childhood Care and Education (each participant will receive a copy).

This National Training Programme provides practitioners with an opportunity to explore the concepts of Diversity and Equality and Inclusion within the preschool context and will support participants in the development of an inclusive early year’s environment for all children. The programme will help participants to;

• Engage effectively with the Diversity, Equality & Inclusion guidelines.

• Be supportive of all children within the service to meet the learning goals outlined within the Identity and Belonging and Well-being themes of Aistear.

• Be supportive of the children and families from minority groups e.g. Traveller Community, Children with Additional Needs, Ethnic Minorities.

• develop an Inclusion Policy as required under the Childcare Early Years Services Regulations 2016

This 15 hour training programme for educators has been developed aligned to the Charter and Guidelines. The training explores a wide variety of challenges facing early childhood services that can inhibit or prevent services operating in a fully inclusive manner. Challenges such as prejudice, real representation of all children in an early childhood service and strategies to promote inclusive practice are explored along with and how to draw up an Inclusion policy for your early childhood service. The programme uses the strength based Anti-Bias approach throughout.
