Event description

Description

The Dóchas Conference 2018 - Changing the Narrative: Building Support for Global Development - will consider the challenges and opportunities to engage the Irish public in the fight against global poverty, inequality and injustice.

You will hear from expert speakers and participate in workshops to stimulate ideas and learning on how we can tell our story about the importance of global justice and equality.

The Dóchas Conference 2018 aims to:

  • Convene a space for members of civil society to discuss challenges and celebrate successes
  • Develop a narrative for change
  • Inspire greater collaboration

Speakers

The Conference will feature a diverse range of internationally-regarded speakers, including:

  • Ruairí De Burca, Director General, Irish Aid
  • Heba Aly, Director, IRIN, who will explore the dangers of junk news, and how we need to find methods of talking about complex issues in an easier way
  • Dr Danny Sriskandarajah, Secretary General and CEO, CIVICUS, who will tell us why we, civil society, remain relevant, but that we need to build a dynamic global solidarity movement
  • Judith Greenwood, Executive Director of CHS Alliance, will consider how we can improve public trust and build a culture of greater accountability and transparency through standards and codes

Our MC for the day will be journalist and broadcaster Dil Wickremasinghe.

Breakout Sessions

Breakout Session 1: ‘Using Innovation to Reach New Audiences’ with War Child Holland and Trócaire

This session will explore the impact and effectiveness of innovations that aim to tell stories better and reach new audiences. War Child will discuss their award-winning ‘Batman’ video, and Trócaire will share their new gaming app. Participants will first hear from the speakers and then break into two groups to learn more about each initiative.

Breakout Session 2: ‘Using Audience Insights to Deliver a Step Change in our Narrative’ with communications expert Will Tucker, John Sutton, Managing Director, Persuasion Republic, and Karen Kennedy, Head of Strategy and Impact, Trócaire

This session will ask how we can interpret data to improve how we engage with the public. It will include key insights on the UK’s Aid Attitudes Tracker analysis, as well as findings from a recent public survey in Ireland. We will ask how insights such as these can help us to reach the right audience.

Breakout Session 3: 'Campaigning to Influence Change' with Senator Ivana Bacik, Jamie Drummond, Co-Founder & Executive Director, Global Strategy, ONE, and Martin O'Brien, Director, Social Change Initiative

Participants will gain first-hand insights from change agents involved in major social campaigning. In this panel discussion, we will explore the ingredients of successful campaigning, and the critical mistakes to avoid.
