Dublin Mountains Community Archaeology Hellfire Club Walk
Event Information
About this event
Perched high on Montpelier Hill, looming ominously above the Dublin skyline, the Hellfire Club is one of Ireland’s most iconic landmarks. Since William Conolly first destroyed an ancient tomb to build a hunting lodge in 1725, it has become a place of stories, myth and folklore. In 2016, a team of archaeologists sought to untangle some of the tales and to discover the real story.
Five years on, you can join archaeologist Neil Jackman on a guided tour of the Hellfire Club and Montpelier Hill to hear about the archaeological excavation, the prehistoric landscapes of the Dublin Mountains and how a new Community Archaeology Project will help people connect with the wonderful heritage of the Dublin's Uplands.
Places are limited so please do book in advance. This walk will take about 2 hours and involves walking uphill on gravel forest paths. Please wear sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate clothing.
The meeting point is the car park of the Hellfire Club Forest. The event will begin promptly at 2 pm.
The Dublin Mountains Community Archaeology Project is a new initiative from South Dublin County Council, Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council and the Dublin Mountains Partnership, supported by the Heritage Council and managed by Abarta Heritage.
