Dublinked Data Visualisation Event
Event Information
Description
We invite you to join us at our Data Visualisation event on Thursday 24th May, to explore the area of data visualisation, learn about available data visualisation tools. Speakers on the day will provide an overview of the current state of play in the area, future trends and identify challenges in the area.
There will be practical demonstrations of creating visualisation, followed by a workshop where participants will be invited to create visualisation using Dublinked data- so why not bring your laptop on the day to create your own data visualisation.
Speakers Include:
Cyril Connolly, Lecturer, Institute of Art, Design & Technology in Dun Laoghaire;
Visualising Road Accident Data
Cyril Connolly is a lecturer in mathematics and statistics at the Institute of Art, Design and Technology (IADT) in Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin. Prior to this he was employed as a statistician in the National Roads Authority (NRA), Apple Inc. and Gallagher (Belfast) Ltd. In 1997 he was appointed to the Motor Insurance Advisory Board (MIAB). MIAB completed its work in 2004 culminating in a report to Government containing 63 recommendations for the reform of the motor insurance sector.
Johnny Ryan, Chief Innovation Officer of The Irish Times;
Data & deep insight in media
Johnny Ryan is Chief Innovation Officer of The Irish Times. He is also an associate on the emerging digital environment in the strategy & marketing group at the Judge Business School of the University of Cambridge. His second book A History of the Internet and the Digital Future was plugged by Marc Benioff and Cory Doctorow, and examines the trends that are shaping the emerging digital environment for business, politics, and media. His writing has appeared in Fortune, BusinessWeek, Wired, The Huffington Post, and Ars Technica. His PhD at the University of Cambridge examined how terrorist memes proliferate online – part of the subject of his first book. He was an O’Reilly Foundation Scholar at Magdalene College, Cambridge. Previously he was a senior researcher at the IIEA, where his work was the most cited source in the European Commission’s official impact assessment that decided against pursuing an EU-wide system of Internet censorship.
Gabrielle Stafford, Managing Director, Twelve Horses
Decision Map Visualisations
Decision Map is the result of a collaboration between Ordnance Survey Ireland (OSi) and Twelve Horses digital agency. The website allows users to view and analyse demographic data from a range of different sources with reference to a map viewer that helps users to relate that data to a place, and through ground breaking data visualisation techniques, that help users understand more about the data. OSi and Twelve Horses are calling this the creation of a single information map.
Practical Demonstrations by:
Vanessa Lopez, IBM Research, Smarter Cities Technology Centre;
Showcase of IBM Visualisation Tools & IBM Many Eyes
Vanessa Lopez is a research engineer at the Smarter Cities Technology Centre (SCTC) at IBM's Dublin Research Laboratory in Ireland. Prior to joining IBM in 2012, she was a research associate at the Knowledge Media Institute (The Open University, UK), where she completed her PhD on novel Semantic Web technologies to support users querying and exploring heterogeneous data sources. She participated in several European projects, developed prototypes for Question Answering over Linked Data, and published her work in more than 30 conferences and journals. Before this, she worked at the European Space Agency. Her current research interests are to investigate how Linked Data technologies can be used to interpret, capture and integrate live and open data from cities.
Colman Mc Mahon, Lecturer, DIT School of Computing:
Getting Started with Data Visualisation
Graduating with a BA from UCD in 1995, Colman emigrated to America to pursue a career that combined creativity, commerce and computers. Heading west to California, Colman worked for 11 years in Hollywood's visual effects (VFX) industry. During this time he worked mainly at The Walt Disney Co. and also as a freelancer. In 2006, Colman returned home to Ireland to undertake a MSc in Information & Knowledge Management at DIT School of Computing.In 2006, Colm also started up his own digital media company . In 2011, Colman was offered a PhD Fellowship at UCD's Innovation Research Unit modeling and simulating the relationship between innovation and profit. In 2012, Colman designed and delivered the first iteration of a new Visualisation module as part of DIT's MSc Data Analytics. Details of Colman's research activities can be found at http://colmanmcmahon.com
Drawing from a new module at DIT, Colman's presentation at Dublinked will be an introduction to the domain of visualisation and a demonstration of powerful yet "do-able" data visualisations. The ethos of the presentation is for people who have little or no visualisation experience but have an aptitude and appetite for using technical tools to surface meaning from data. The tools used will be R, R Studio and Inkscape.
