Description

ENCOUNTERING THE SACRED: THE ARCHAEOLOGY AND HERITAGE OF PILGRIMAGE

This conference is presented by the National Monuments Service of the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht in partnership with the Office of Public Works and organised by Archaeology Ireland.

ENCOUNTERING THE SACRED: THE ARCHAEOLOGY AND HERITAGE OF PILGRIMAGE is a one-day conference focusing on sacred sites and the significance of pilgrimage. From prehistory to the present day, pilgrimage has served to connect and reconnect people and places. An interdisciplinary gathering of eminent scholars and practitioners will explore the connections between communities and monuments and their role in establishing sense of place.

SPEAKERS WILL INCLUDE:

  • Professor Robin Coningham, UNESCO Chair in Archaeological Ethics and Practice in Cultural Heritage, Department of Archaeology, Durham University
  • Dr Lee Clare, German Archaeological Institute, Berlin.
  • Frank Coyne, Aegis Archaeology.
