About the workshop: All people with dementia experience changes in their communication abilities. The stages and subtypes of dementia will impact the person in different ways. Those who care for people with dementia have an essential role in supporting communication and advocating for the person with dementia.

To maximize the persons communication potential it is important to understand how dementia impacts communication, the nature & degree of the communication impairment and how best to support each person’s interactions. There is a large body of evidence supporting communication training of health care professionals and families.

This 1 Day workshop on communication interventions will:

  • increase your knowledge of communication challenges in dementia
  • improve your insight into the impacts of communication disability
  • teach you ways to compensate for and support communication
  • help you support the decision making and choices of the person with dementia
  • explore opportunities in your workplace (home, hospital, or day centre) to enhance communication through activities

Course delivery will be in a workshop format including case studies, experiential learning, and shared care experiences. This course was developed by Dr. Suzanna Dooley a speech and language therapist specialising in dementia for all HSCPs, Nurses and other clinical health care staff.
