Event description

Description

This seminar is for Healthcare Professionals only and the content will be targeted at this level so it is not open to the General Public. CPD points have been applied for through the RCPI and the NMBI and will be available to healthcare professionals in attendance.

The event will be led by Dr. Stewart J. Tepper, MD Professor of Neurology at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth (Dartmouth Medical School) in Hanover, New Hampshire. Dr. Stewart Tepper is a leading expert in area of CGRPs and he was a key advisor to all three pharmaceutical companies involved in developing these drugs during patient clinical trials in the US.

Dr. Tepper will present for the first time to the Irish healthcare industry, a comprehensive overview of CGRP inhibitors for the prevention and acute treatment of migraine. CGRP (Calcitonin Gene Related Peptide) is a neuropeptide which is released into the blood stream during a migraine attack and it is believed to have a central role in the underlying mechanisms of a migraine attack. CGRP drugs block the activity of the peptides, which spikes during a migraine attack. Recent results from final Phase 3 clinical trials targeting CGRPs are still producing positive results, with these drugs expected to reach the US market in 2018.

All of the anti-CGRP products are injected and some are injected subcutaneously (under the skin) and others are injected intravenously (into a vein). While some preventative medications are prescribed for migraine, such as Botox, CGRP’s are the first preventative medications specifically developed for migraine.

During this seminar, Dr. Tepper will also provide a comprehensive overview of the current medications available for the treatment of migraine and headache. He will discuss the use of neuromodulation in the treatment of migraine. Neuromodulation is a relatively new treatment for migraine patients and involves direct stimulation of the nervous system with electrical signals

There will be a comprehensive Q&A session following Dr. Tepper's presentation and this event offers a rare opportunity to meet with a leading international expert in the field of headache and migraine.
