Session 1: Values, Education and Values Education – (Com)Promising Grounds for Conviction

In this first session we will explore participants’ understanding of the terms values, education and values education and seek to examine them in the context of current theory and practice in Values Education. This will include brief overviews of Character Education, Moral Reasoning and Care. This session will provide a useful base from which to explore the strands related to values in the primary and second-level Educate Together Ethical Education Curriculums and will also be relevant to teachers of Philosophy, Religion and Politics and Society.

Session 2: Valuing Dialogue – Slippery Slopes and Rough Ground

Building on the learning from session one, in this second session we will engage in conversations about values such as respect, equality, democracy, diversity and community and explore ways to communicate and examine these values with students. In particular, we will look at how to create dialogic communities of ethical enquiry in our classrooms and evaluate this as an approach to values education.
