Description

This course is aimed at clinicians who see clients with MS as part of their regular caseload but who do not work full time in the area of MS rehabilitation. It is suitable for clinicians working in primary care, rehab facility or an acute hospital setting.

Event description (outline and/or agenda);

This study day will combine lectures based on the latest research evidence and interactive workshops to apply this knowledge to clinical cases.

The three cases will consider:

1) a newly diagnosed person with a health promoting exercise focus,

2) a person with moderate disability focusing on balance and falls,

3) wheelchair users focusing on physiotherapy and alternative delivery models

Learning outcomes;

By the end of this study day participants will;

  • Understand the historical context for exercise in MS and barriers and facilitators to exercise
  • Know the latest evidence for exercise and physiotherapy interventions for people with a range of mobility limitations
  • Understand how exercise and physiotherapy interventions can be optimised to improve physical activity, balance and falls, and maintenance/improvement of function.
  • To consider alternative models of delivery including group interventions, self-management and technology and assistant supported programmes
  • Apply this knowledge to clinical case studies with mild, moderate and severe mobility limitations due to MS

Presenters profile; The presenters are members of the MS Research Team at UL led by Prof Susan Coote and have expertise in their given areas through both clinical expertise and PhD studies.
