Experiments in Automated Mobility: Shaping Smart Urban Futures

Prof. Pauline McGuirk University of Wollongong, Australia

Smart mobilities and autonomous vehicles (AVs) are a key facet of emerging ‘smart cities’. In a proliferation of pilots, test beds and trials of autonomous vehicles across the world, smart urban futures are being anticipated. Using the notion of experimentation, we begin to think through the practices and implications of these tests of automated mobility as they negotiate and craft the material politics of the city, and the politics of urban mobility in particular. We argue that differently configured forms of experimentation offer diverse possibilities both for the rematerialisation of the city through automated mobility, and for the urban futures being crafted.
