Details:

At 2.30 pm On February 16th in Kinvara, County Galway, a group of writers, artists, journalists and activists are coming together to put on a mini-arts festival to show their solidarity with the people of Nicaragua who have been enduring severe repression and unrest under the Government of Daniel Ortega. All of those involved in this festival have connections with Nicaragua and were and are supporters of the Sandinista revolution which overthrew the Somoza Dictatorship there and oversaw huge changes in the distribution of land and resources in favour of the ordinary Nicaraguan people. In recent years however under the stewardship of Daniel Ortega and his wife and vice president Rosario Murillo, ordinary people in Nicaragua have faced increasing repression culminating in the events of last April where demonstrators were killed by state forces and by paramilitary organisations working in tandem with the state. In recent years the ideals of ‘Sandinismo’ have been replaced by what seems to be Orteguismo’ where the family of the President and Vice Presidenthave consolidated their grip on the state by taking an ever tougher line against dissent. Their alliances with right wing Christian powers, in particular, are undermining the hard won rights of women in Nicaragua. The participants in this ‘Festival in Exile’ wish to show solidarity with those whose ideals of social justice are now being betrayed by Orteguismo.

Nicaragua is a country in which poetry is part of the life-blood of society, where it crosses all classes and is deeply engaged with the politics and philosophies of the people. ‘Festival in Exile’ will see Irish artists and activists get together to send a message of solidarity to those in Nicaragua by doing what they do best, using art to open conversations across borders from person to person beneath and above nation states. Nicaraguans have already shown the world that they can conceive of and build a fairer society. We will gather in poetry, theatre, music and conversation in Kinvara to celebrate their example to us all, and to send them our solidarity for the challenges they now face.

Festival in Exile will be MCd by former Irish Times and Guardian Latin American Correspondent Michael MacCaughan and will feature performances from award winning theatre makers Donal O’Kelly and Little John Nee, Poetry performances from Rita Ann Higgins, Sarah Clancy, Lorna Shaughnessy and Helen Dixon (Nicaragua/UK). Music and poetry from Catherine Ann Cullen . Dr Lorna Shaughnessy will give a presentation on the poets of the Sandinista Revolution which will feature readings of work by Ernesto Cardenal and Giaconda Belli, there will be music from Nicaraguan Guitarist Jayro Gonzalez and the event will culminate with a panel discussion with ‘Brigadistas’ Molly O’Duffy, Mags Brehony, Betty Purcell, Mercedes Verona and Donal O’Kelly.

Please note that tickets are limited and should be booked in advance here- we will be taking donations on the day with a suggested minimum of €5.00 from those who can afford it. All money raised will go towards artists' travel expenses with any surplus being donated to Nicaraguan feminist organisations.
