Event description

Description

The documentary "Chauka, please tell us the time" (2017) was shot on a mobile phone by detainee and journalist Behrouz Boochani from inside the former Australian detention centre for refugees and asylum-seekers in Manus Island, Papua New Guine. The images were sent to filmmaker Arash Kamali Sarvestani who finished the film. "Chauka, please tell us the time" is a unique record of the cruel routine of detainees in the immigration centre. Chauka refers to a bird from the Manus Island, a symbol that Manusians regard with deep pride. In a cruel twist, the same name was given to the prison’s solitary confinement unit. The Chauka allows locals to tell the time from its regular singing.

The screening is organised by the Amnesty CineClub, supported by Ormeau Baths and by Larne House Visitor Group (larnehousevisitorgroup.org.uk) It is part of Cinema Day 2018. Celebrating the diversity and scope of film exhibition across Northern Ireland, Cinema Day is an initiative presented by Film Hub NI (part of the BFI Film Audience Network) and supported by Northern Ireland Screen. See www.filmhubni.org for more details. For any enquiries, please email amnestybelfast@gmail.com
