Filmmaking with John Boorman & Guests

This practical, hands-on, immersive course in directing and contemporary filmmaking will bring you through the creative process of filmmaking from script to screen.

You will learn the art of screenwriting, storyboarding, scheduling, casting, directing, lighting, camera work, sound recording and digital editing.

At this end of this course you will have the necessary skills to make a short film for your business or for pleasure.

Detailed Content

Day 1: The Unturndownable Script

  • Introductions: Meet John Boorman and your fellow attendees

Intensive study in:

  • Genres
  • Structure
  • Final draft
  • Working alone
  • Working with a writer
  • How to attract a lead actor
  • Group discussion on a scene written by screenwriter Emma Ryan
  • Social Programme: group welcome dinner in city centre (optional)

Day 2: Where to Point the Camera

Intensive study in:

  • Storyboarding
  • Number of set ups
  • Film the art of the possible
  • Limitations force you into creative solutions
  • Group discussion on the scene

Day 3: Nuts and Bolts

On this day Michael Dryhurst an experienced line producer and production manager, whose work includes The Emerald Forest (1985) and Hope and Glory (1987), will support John Boorman with an intensive study in:

  • Schedule
  • Budget
  • Set design
  • Locations
  • Working with AD
  • Working with a Production Manager
  • Working with a Set Designer
  • Number of shooting days
  • Number of set ups per day
  • Relationship with DP
  • Directing actors
  • Schedule for “Queen and Country (2014) to be distributed and discussed
  • Group discussion on a scene from “The Making of Zardoz”
  • Social Programme: Irish Film School Networking Event

Day 4: Your Light

On this day actors will be brought into the studio to demonstrate the casting process. Two actors will be selected during this process to shoot the test scene.

Students will have the opportunity to try different filmmaking techniques with John Boorman and cinematographer Seamus Deasy, whose work includes Queen and Country (2014) and The Tiger’s Tail (2006), including:

  • The Camera
  • Movement
  • Lighting
  • Set ups
  • Framing
  • Breaking down a scene
  • Hands-on demonstration by Seamus Deasy of three types of camera: film and digital cameras and super 16mm camera
  • Shooting and editing the test scene

Day 5: Post

On the final day students will work with John Boorman on various elements of post- production with an intensive study in:

  • Complete editing of the test scene
  • ADR
  • How a movie finds its shape
  • Previews
  • Connecting with the audience
  • Group discussion and review of the week
  • Distribution of John Boorman’s essay “The Film Process”
  • Presentation of Certificates by John Boorman

  • Social Programme: networking drinks

What's the refund policy?


Unless the course or masterclass or event is cancelled by Irish Film School, a 20% processing fee will be incurred.


Within 10 calendar days of the course start date, or in the event of non-attendance, refunds will not be given.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

Yes. Please contact with any request to amend your registration information

Is my registration fee or ticket transferrable?


Unless the course is re-scheduled by Irish Film School, a 10% processing fee will be incurred. Payment may only be transferred to the next instance of the same programme.

In the event of the participant wishing to transfer a booking to an alternative date, the participant must notify us by email ( more than 7 days prior to the commencement of the course. Every effort will be made on our behalf to accommodate the request. However, this will be subject to availability and at the discretion of Irish Film School.

Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?

Yes - you can gift your ticket if you are unable to attend on the day.
