About this Event

11.30 – 12.00: Irish Cinema Audiences 1950-1960: Dr. Sarah Culhane, Maynooth University - In collaboration with Age Action Ireland, the Irish Cinema Audiences project examines the history of cinema-going in 1950s Ireland. The project uses oral history methodologies to gather the memories of ordinary cinema-goers from across the country. To date, over 250 people from around the country have shared their memories and experiences of a time when Irish people went to the cinema on average 18 times per year. This short presentation will include stories and clips from some of the project’s interviewees.

12.00 – 12.15: Presentation of the IFI Player by Shauna Lyons (IFI Public Affairs and Marketing Director) - With over 600 digital items and 15 different collections the IFI Archive collection spans 1897 to the present day, and the cameras of filmmakers have captured the development of modern Ireland in a uniquely accessible manner. The most important social, political and historical events of the last century are represented, enabling us to explore our cultural identity and connect with the past.

12.15 – 13.00: Exploring the IFI Player collections. Participants will have the opportunity to explore some of the collections and footage found on the IFI Player. Age Action volunteers will be on hand to help you explore the collection and participants are also welcome to bring their own devices (laptops, tablets, smartphones) to access the Player on the day.
