Programme Overview

Finance for Non-Finance Managers is intended to provide an overview of the main aspects of finance that confront an increasing number of individuals in business today. There is increased competition, better financial supports and systems and the importance of understanding and appreciating all aspects of the finance domain to remain ahead of the competition.

This has led to an increased need for small to medium sized business owners and managers to have an understanding of financial reporting, management accounting, control and auditing to ensure the financial viability and growth for their business.

This one day course is aimed at providing an overview of these areas of finance. The objective is to give participants the confidence to understand and engage with the main financial aspects of their business.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course learners will:

  • Have an awareness of the role of the finance function in the organisation

  • Understand financial reporting practices and techniques – including the Profit & Loss (Statement of Income & Expenditure) and Balance Sheet (Statement of Financial position)

  • Have an understanding of the main facets of financial management including cash/cash-flow/treasury, accounts payable and receivable, debt collection, payroll and taxation.

  • Understand the principles and concepts of costing and budget preparation

  • Understand budgetary control and how to interpret a budgetary control report

  • Have an overview of control and audit issues and the roles of external, internal and value for money (VFM) audit.

Trainer Profile

Dr Cyril Sullivan is an accountant with extensive experience of governance and finance in the private and public sectors. His roles included time as Director of Finance and Support Services/Company Secretary at the IPA, Head of Support Services at the National Roads Authority, a senior accountant with Eircom plc and an auditor with the Comptroller and Auditor General's Office in Dublin Castle. He also has over twenty years’ experience as a lecturer and training specialist in the area of finance, governance and audit.

Qualifications:

Cyril is a qualified accountant (FCCA and ACMA), has a BSc (Comp. Sc) and an M(Econ) Sc from TCD / IPA, an MBA from UCD’s Smurfit School and has a doctorate in Governance from Queens University, Belfast.
