FINTAN O’TOOLE - SAME PEOPLE, SAME PLACE??

In James Joyce's ‘Ulysses’ Leopold Bloom defines a nation as the same people living in the same place. But then, since he is both Irish and Jewish, he realises that this definition does not work and adds "or in different places". The Irish have long lived in "different places" but now people from "different places" are also making Ireland their home. So how can we think about the Irish "nation" now? The USA uses the slogan ‘e pluribus unum’ - one thing emerging from diverse elements. This is the way Irishness has to be seen, too, in the 21st century. It is a big shift but one that we have already had to make in trying to solve the Northern Ireland conflict. We have come to see diversity not as a challenge to our identity but as an essential and permanent part of it. In what promises to be a insightful meditation on one of the most important challenges facing our present and future society, join Fintan for an intense and exciting exploration of the notion of Irishness and the essence of nationality.
