Why the outdoors and nature?

We believe spending time in interesting spaces combined with activities in the natural environment leads to better outcomes in terms of gaining insights, increasing creativity and teamwork and improving problem solving capabilities and outcomes.

Great authors and artists have always been drawn to natural surroundings though aside from their obvious loveliness, it’s been shown to have a massive effect on our ability to be creative.

Although he was not physically fit, Beethoven would start each day with the same ritual: a morning walk during which he would scribble into a pocket sketchbook the first rough notes of whatever musical idea inevitably entered his head. Having done that, having limbered up his mind and transported himself into his version of a trance zone during the walk, he would return to his room and get to work.

Benefits of the outdoors in today’s world

When we’re feeling overwhelmed from the stressors of urban life and being plugged-in 24/7, nature hikes can be strong medicine.

According to a study by University of Kansas psychologists Ruth Ann Atchley and David L. Strayer, creative problem solving can be improved by disconnecting from technology and reconnecting with nature. In this study, participants hiked while backpacking in nature for approximately four days and they were prohibited from using technology. They were asked to perform tasks requiring creativity and complex problem solving. They found that those immersed in the hiking excursions had increased performance on problem-solving tasks by 50 percent.

Standford University researchers published a recent article in the Journal of Experimental Psychology which finds that a person’s creative output increases by an average of 60 percent when walking

Your Guide - Fergal O’Farrell

I love working with individuals and groups of people who are pushing personal and work boundaries, I really admire those who are challenging the status quo, pushing their personal limits as they grow personally and develop their ideas/projects/start-up enterprise.

I have over 20 years’ experience working in an international retail environment in financial, planning and organisation development roles. I have been involved in food, technology and social enterprise start-ups and I understand the challenges – the highs and the lows. I have an MSc in Responsibility and Business Practice as well as qualifications in coaching, and accountancy.

My approach is based on the philosophy that deep down we each know what we want to do and that we are equipped with the resources and strengths to follow our dreams and to achieve our goals.

However it doesn’t always feel like we know where we want to go or how to get there.

My role is to help you figure out how to move forward, achieve your goals and see your dreams come through.

“Follow your dreams, they know the way”.
