About this event
Join Dr Frank Prendergast, Emeritus Research Fellow at the College of Engineering & Built Environment, Technological University Dublin. for a fascinating talk tracing the phenomena of light throughout the ages.
The contrast between daylight and darkness is a primal natural cycle fundamentally linked to the predictable appearance and disappearance of the sun and moon each day. This makes the alternation of light and darkness among the first phenomena ever observed by humans. Over millennia, the human psyche has variously categorised these opposites as good and evil, hope and despair, life and death. Not surprisingly then, light and darkness has shaped our art, mythologies, cosmologies and belief systems across all cultures and time. In this richly illustrated talk, Frank brings his interdisciplinary background in the sciences and archaeology to bear on this intriguing topic.
The talk will conclude with a presentation of the spectacular solar illumination and shadow casting at the prehistoric mega-tombs of Newgrange and Knowth in the Boyne Valley - arguably the finest examples of such prehistoric cultural manifestations in northwest Europe.
Tickets €12, refreshments included. Friends Scheme Members €8.
