Event description

Description

The Arthritis Ireland Annual Lecture 2019 will be delivered by one of Ireland's preeminent - and most popular - scientists, Prof. Luke O'Neill.

His address, 'Frontiers in Arthritis Research' promises to be informative - as well as entertaining - and will consider his latest research into the prospect of new discoveries that will improve our understanding of inflammatory diseases and which might lead to new treatments for arthritis.

Luke O'Neill is Professor of Biochemistry at Trinity College Dublin and a global pioneer in inflammation research. Earlier this year, he was awarded an EU European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant valued at €2.5 million.

Prof. O’Neill life’s work is to make discoveries that might lead to new treatments for inflammatory diseases. His ERC-funded programme focuses on the metabolic changes that occur in a key cell associated with inflammation, called the macrophage.

Arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer’s disease all have one thing in common: inflammation. Understanding what causes it is crucial to developing new treatments for these chronic illnesses.

Prof. O'Neill was the Founder Director of the Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute in 2011. He holds numerous awards and honours, including the Royal Irish Academy Gold Medal for Life Sciences (2012), the European Federation of Immunology Societies Medal (2014) and the Milstein Award, International Cytokine and Interferon Society (2018). He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) in 2016. In 2015, he was listed in the Thompson/Reuters top 1% of scientists (2002- 2012) in immunology and pharmacology/toxicology.

A regular contributor to the Pat Kenny Show on Newstalk, Prof. O'Neill's book, Humanology: A Scientist’s Guide to our Amazing Existence was published in 2018.
