About this Event

Overview

With the increased number of students diagnosed with specific learning differences and the wide variety of assistive technologies recommended to them, there is a clear gap in the technologies recommended for students and the skills required to train the students in these technologies. This course will help educators gain a core understanding of how these assistive technologies work in order to maximise their students’ academic potential.

Course Contents

The course will be comprised of presentations and hands-on practice where participants will have the opportunity to undertake practical training in the core technologies. This online training course incorporates the novel use of newly emerging Virtual Desktop Technology. Each participant will be assigned their own virtual desktop remotely to undertake the practical aspects of the course from the comfort of their own laptop or computer. The course will cover the following primary areas:

• Narration Technologies.

• Note-taking Technologies.

• Dictation Technologies.

• Mind mapping Technologies.

• Mathematics Writing Equation Technology.

Learning Outcome

Following the successful completion of this course, participants will have broadened their knowledge of assistive technologies which should enable them to identify suitable technology interventions for students with specific learning differences. This course will also be of benefit to teachers in their work which can significantly reduce the time it takes in the composition of lesson plans, reports, research papers and theses.

Participant Requirements

This is an online training event where participants are required to have a computer, an internet connection (that can accommodate remote distance learning) and preferably a microphone. Most modern laptops have an inbuilt microphone pre-installed. A notebook and pen is also an imperative requirement.

About the Trainer

The course will be delivered by Mark Burleigh, who has over 10 years experience in teaching Assistive Technology to audiences from primary to third level education. He holds a single honours degree in Computer Science and a research Masters Degree in Computer Science from University College Cork. He undertakes research in the area of assistive technology in higher education and has published papers in the field. He is also an Oracle Certified Associate in Java and has a passion for teaching technology to all levels.
