Fundraising Trek to Italy:

Walk The Amalfi Coast

Join us for an unforgettable experience trekking through Italy’s Amalfi Coast – climb Vesuvius and see Pompeii – 14th to 21st October 2017

Following hot on the heels of our 2016 trek to Spain, we are now already accepting participation in our 2017 overseas trek to Italy. This year’s sponsored trek promises to be the best yet – certainly the most exciting and beautiful. Our ask is the same: we need you to raise a minimum sponsorship donation of €3,000 – all vitally needed funds – and in return we can promise you the experience of a lifetime. Share the company of a band of merry trekkers as you experience Naples, Vesuvius & Herculaneum, Pompeii, Amalfi & Atrani, Ravello, ‘Sentiero degli Dei’, Praiano, Positano and Capri. Transfers, accommodation, food, guides are all included so all you need to do is bring your walking boots and a positive attitude to have some great fun while raising some vital funds for Our Lady’s Hospice & Care Services.

Your trek will take in a web of ancient pathways along stunning shorelines and cliffs; it will lead you through charming coastal towns and through rustic woodlands; you’ll see the most beautiful villages perched up on craggy peaks as you hike along the stunning “Footpath of the Gods”, and you’ll take in the scenery from the seas as you enjoy several boat trips as well.

Other highlights include the intriguing Valley of the Mills (the location of Europe’s first paper mills, almost a 1000 years old), the spectacular villages of Positano, Atrani and Ravello, a visit and a beautiful loop walk over the island of Capri. And of course beautiful Amalfi itself.

Finally the trek will take in a spectacular detour: a specialist volcano guide will take you and the other trekkers right around the rim of Vesuvius – truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Day 1

  • You will arrive in the bustling city of Naples. You’ll meet your tour leader, then transfer to our hotel in Agerola, high above the Amalfi Coast.
  • Accommodation in Agerola. A lovely Italian dinner is included at your resort.

Day 2

  • Mostly downhill today (a perfect introduction for a week’s trekking!)
  • We follow the path down from Bomerano, on the Agerola Highplain, to the shores of the Mediterranean and the town of Amalfi.
  • There are sections of steps today, but there is plenty of opportunity to rest and go at your own pace.
  • We have plenty of time to visit to the beautiful medieval town of Amalfi with its wonderful ‘Duomo’ and the Paradise cloister.
  • Optional walk to the nearby village of Atrani (Italy’s smallest village), for a drink
  • Accommodation: Agerola – Meals included: 1 breakfast, 1 picnic lunch, 1 dinner

Day 3

  • Today’s walk is one of the most amazing round walks Agerola has to offer. Along relatively easy paths & tracks we ascend towards the highest peaks of the Amalfi Coast. Stunning views of the coastline.
  • A relaxed stroll through the charming village of Bomerano, but then, through vineyards and chestnut forest, the path starts to climb.
  • We reach the ridge of the Monte Tre Calli, from where stunning 360 degree views are to be had, ranging from the Agerola Plain to Capri.
  • There is an optional onward trek to climb to the Monte Sant’Angelo from here (or time for relaxation).
  • An easy descent towards the little chapel of the ‘Virgin of the Silence’, with unparalleled views of Positano.
  • Accommodation: Agerola – Meals included: 1 breakfast, 1 picnic lunch, 1dinner

Day 4

  • We drive to Mount Vesuvius where a private tour has been arranged for you to actually go inside the volcano’s rim (normally closed to the public). At 4000 feet, the panoramic views here down to the Bay of Naples are spectacular.
  • Descend for a relaxed lunch before moving on to see the remains of Pompeii, famously destroyed in 79AD when Vesuvius errupted.
  • Gain an insight into Roman life, walk the chariot-marked back streets, see the exceptional frescoes, visit the amphitheater, ‘Villa of Mysteries’, public baths and more.
  • A private coach collects you and the group and drives to a great place in Agerola for dinner.

Day 5

  • In the morning we first walk to the beautiful little town of Atrani, along a very scenic path, with great
    viewpoints on the city centre.
  • We proceed through the narrow white little streets and then up the ‘Valley of the Dragon’, until we reach Ravello, another highlight of the Amalfi Coast, where we have plenty of time to explore the many medieval monuments, as well as taking a special visit to the beautiful Villa Cimbrone with it’s amazing gardens.
  • We descend into one of southern Italy’s most interesting nature reserves, the ‘Valle delle Ferriere’, then passing on through the valley of the watermills, with its ruins of Europe’s most ancient paper factories, dating back to the 11th century.
  • You’ll have the option to visit the fascinating paper museum, the Museo della Carta, or go for a ‘limoncello’ tasting in the shade of the lemon trees. Back in Amalfi there will still be some time for a swim or an ‘aperitivo’.
  • In the evening we are free to choose from a large choice of restaurants, ranging from simple pizzeria’s to exclusive restaurants.
  • Accommodation: Agerola – Meals included: 1 breakfast

Day 6

  • Today you’ll have a day to relax at the hotel or down to the sea. Alternatively you could enjoy a boat ride along the coast and visit the island of Capri.
  • Capri (the place Roman Emperors used to holiday) offers a wonderful round walk past habours and through lemon groves to the central square.
  • Cultural and natural wonders abound here and views are second to none in the Mediterranean. See the villa of Roman Emperor Tiberius, pass Arco Naturale, and see the three rocks off the south coast that have become the most painted rocks in the world!
  • Opportunity to visit the Certosa and the Gardens of August, from where you can also opt to walk down to Marina Piccola, along the spectacular Via Krupp.
  • Alternatively – just relax back at Amalfi and enjoy a day swimming in the beautiful Mediterranean seas.
  • In the evening you are free to choose from a large choice of restaurants, ranging from simple pizzerias to exclusive restaurants.
  • Accommodation: Agerola – Meals included: 1 breakfast

Day 7

  • In the morning we’ll do ‘one of the world’s greatest hikes’, according to many guides: Taking a panoramic road high above the coast, we walk to the village square of Bomerano where we can take a coffee and buy some sandwiches. Then we continue along one of the most famous footpaths of the area, the ‘Footpath of the Gods’. This path really lives up to its name, suspended between the sky and the Mediterranean. It winds through unique scenery, with unrivalled views over the coast and sea.
  • Lunch in the small hamlet of Nocelle, before moving on to the little village of Montepertuso, then a short walk on to Positano. This is a picture postcard village – almost vertical and full of colour and a network of ancient paths.
  • Time is available for a swim here (or just relax with a drink on one of the many terraces).
  • A boat takes us back home to Amalfi for our last night in the hotel there and dinner
  • Accommodation: Agerola – Meals included: 1 breakfast, 1 warm lunch, 1 dinner

Day 8

  • The tour ends in Agerola after breakfast today. Coach transfer to Airport.

FAQs

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to attend?

There are no minimum (or maximum) age limits. Our youngest participant is currently in her 20s and our eldest is a retiree, so it's likely that there will be smaller breakaway groups within our party all walking at their own pace. There is plenty of scope to find your own level and really emjoy this trip.

What are the travel requirements?

You will need an up-to-date passport and your own travel indurance.

If you want a room to yourself, a single room supplement of 200 euros is payable, otherwise you can share a room free of charge with one of the other participants.

What can I bring into the event?

You will have 20kg baggage. We can advise you on specific items to bring along with you once you sign up to attend.

How can I contact the organiser with any questions?

Tel: 01 4911072 or email: dlawson@olh.ie or visit OLH.ie/Trek

What's the refund policy?

To reserve your flight we need a deposit of 300 euros. This is non-refundable, but it does come off your total (so you only need to raise a further 2700 eurons in sponsorship money.

How can I raise 3000 euros?

We have lots of ideas and can provide you with stacks of support. For example:

  • Bag packing in supermarkets
  • Raffles
  • Pub quizes
  • Coffee Mornings
  • Book and cake sales
  • Everyday Hero website

Please give us a call to discuss and you will discover that it is a very realistic target :)
