Event description
Gallery Press Event Anne Marie Ní Churreáin and John McAuliffe

About this event

In this event John McAuliffe and Annemarie Ní Churreáin will read from their new books and talk about how their work is shaped by particular places and how memory, of place, and of specific moments, drive their work. Kerry has been important to both poets, and they will also reflect on their experience of poetry here, and how working life impacts on the development of their poems.

Annemarie Ní Churreáin comes from the Donegal Gaeltacht. Bloodroot, published by Doire Press in 2017, was shortlisted for the Shine Strong Award and the Julie Suk Award. She is a recipient of a Next Generation Artist Award and co-recipient of the Markievicz Award. She has received literary fellowships from USA, Germany and Scotland and was writer-in-residence at NUI, Maynooth, Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris, and in Kerry (2017-2018). The Poison Glen (2021) is her first collection with The Gallery Press.

John McAuliffe grew up in Listowel, Co Kerry and now lives in Manchester where he is Professor of Poetry at the University of Manchester and Associate Publisher at the independent poetry press, Carcanet. John McAuliffe has published six books with The Gallery Press, most recently Selected Poems (2021), which was an Observer Book of the Year, and The Kabul Olympics, which was a Guardian Poetry Book of the Month in June 2020 and a TLS and Irish Times 2020 Book of the Year. His versions of the Bosnian poet Igor Klikovac, Stockholm Syndrome (Smith Doorstop), was a Poetry Book Society Winter Pamphlet Choice in 2019, and his work as editor includes Carcanet's New Poetries VIII (2021) and Everything to Play For: 99 Poems About Sport (Poetry Ireland, 2015).
