About this event
Distance: 13/14km
Height Gain: 700m approx
Time: 6 hours
Fitness Level: Moderate fitness
Description of hike: This hike will start in Glangarra woods. Initially the walk will wind its way through some lovely mature forestry before breaking out on to the open hillside for a climb to the top of Greenaun. Most of the steady climbing happens once you exit the forest but the views from the top of Greenaun are worth it. Behind you are the Knocklmeldowns and Commergahs and in front you will see vistas of the Golden vale spread out below.
After a break to get your breath back and take in the scenery we will head over to O Loughlin's Castle. From a distance this curious stone work resemble a castle but is in fact a natural phenomenon of shattered rock dating from the ice age.
Equipment required:
Rain gear, boots, back pack, water, lunch/food, warm drink, hat and gloves and lots of warm clothes.
While it is Spring it will still be cold. In general temperature drops by 1 degree every 100metres in height we climb. We will be climbing approx. 800metres so it will be approx. 8 degrees colder at the top. Please bear this in mind when packing your gear for the days hike. Wind chill can make this colder again so please bring the gear listed above.
