Description

Getting Involved: Building PPI capacity in researchers

Attendees can choose one of the two streams on offer during this study day. Members of the PRIMER group, the Primary Care PPI group at Manchester University, are joining the PPI Ignite @ NUI Galway team to deliver this training day. Workshops will be co-facilitated by researchers and PPI contributors. This study day is funded through the HRB Conference and Events Sponsorship scheme.

Pick either stream 1 or stream 2- do not choose both streams.

Stream 1: Introduction to PPI for researchers

Audience: Researchers, academic staff and PhD students who have little or no prior knowledge or experience of PPI.

Format: There will be three workshops (participants must attend all three workshops, as each workshop builds on the content of the previous workshop):

  • Workshop 1:PPI in research- what and why?
  • Workshop 2: PPI approaches across the research cycle
  • Workshop 3: Initiating, building and sustaining relationships with PPI partners in research

Objectives: By the end of the day, participants in Stream 1 will:

  • Understand what PPI in research is
  • Be able to differentiate these from other research activities that are not PPI
  • Understand different PPI approaches and be able to identify some potential PPI activities in their own research area
  • Have developed skills to help identify, build and maintain relationships with PPI partners

The workshops will involve a mixture of theoretical background, interactive presentations and active individual and group work.

Stream 2: Communication skills in PPI

Audience: Researchers, academic staff and PhD students who already have a knowledge of PPI and have some practical experience working with PPI contributors in research

Format:

This workshop is designed for researchers who would like to improve their communication skills for the purposes of involving the public in research and will use a combination of presentations, discussions and activities to help you to feel confident in communicating with the public when doing patient and public involvement within your work.

By the end of the day, participants in Stream 2 will have developed skills to help:

  • Negotiate with public contributors when making decisions
  • Manage expectations of public contributors
  • Manage difficult situations and disagreements
  • Identify what can be achieved with meaningful partnerships

Many of these skills are transferable skills in leading and facilitating meetings and events that will be valuable to all areas of academic life.

When you register for Stream 2 you ask you to submit a PPI question specific to your research (past, present or future), focusing on a key challenge that you have/anticipate encountering. The challenge can be a general challenge or very specific to your own research. We will address some of these challenges during the workshop.
