Event description

Description

Melanoma is a potentially serious type of skin cancer that often occurs in young and middle aged adults. It is one fo the most common cancer in Ireland with approximately 1,000 cases in Ireland each year. The number of cases and associated deaths from this form of cancer have unfortunately been increasing in Ireland over the last 20 years.

If melanoma is diagnosed early enough, it is often cured through surgery alone. However, treatment is much more challenging where the disease has already spread.

Research on melanoma has led to a number of new advances in combatting and treating the disease and we are grateful to Dr. Derek Power, Medical Oncologist at the Mercy and Cork University Hospitals who will outline the latest advances in our understanding of advanced melanoma and its prevention and treatment in the latest of our “Decoding Cancer” talks.

Dr Derek Power is a Consultant Medical Oncologist at the Mercy and Cork University Hospitals in Cork. In his clinic he treats a number of cancers, including melanoma, gut and genitourinary forms of the disease.
He initially graduated in 1994 from Trinity College Dublin with a pharmacy degree, but then moved into the study of medicine graduating from the Royal College of Surgeons in 2001.

This was followed by two fellowships in the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre, New York, prior to returning to Cork to take up his consultant post in 2010, when he was jointly appointed an honorary clinical lecturer in University College Cork. His is an author on more than 80 papers, reviews and book chapters on cancer and various aspects of cancer research.

The talk is free and open to everyone. If you would like to attend please register on Eventbrite.
