Event description

Description

A Saturday afternoon sport climbing trip with the Gilford Youth Climbing Club.

This event is open to families attending the weekly, Tuesday evening, Gilford Youth Climbing Club at Gilford Community Centre and is aimed at families with children who would like to experience sport climbing at the recently redeveloped Altnadue Quarry, just outside Castlewellan.

For children to attend this event, they must be accompanied by a supervising parent/guardian throughout the session. A supervising parent/guardian may book a maximum of 4 tickets for young people in their care for this event. A supervising parent must also purchase a ticket.

The £10 per person cost of the instruction ticket includes: instruction from qualified rock climbing instructors as well as equipment - such as harnesses, shoes, belaying devices, quick draws and climbing ropes.

The instructors will deliver workshops throughout the session to help you and your children develop skills to become independent and safe sport climbers. A non-exhaustive list of these sport climbing skills include:

  • fitting a climbing harness
  • tying in to a climbing rope with an appropriate and well-dressed knot
  • top / bottom rope belay setup and belaying using the quarry's fixed (bolted) protection
  • respecting the rock - climbing only with clean shoes
  • lead climbing on bolted sport climbs
  • lead belaying - especially regarding appropriate belaying of young/lighter climbers or where there is a weight difference between belayer and climber
  • re-threading a lower off safely
  • placing, clipping and removing quick draws - are your quick draws going to damage your rope? How do you know?
  • lowering a climber to the ground - is your rope long enough? Knot in the end of the rope?
  • looking after your climbing rope from sharp edges, dirt and grit
  • managing problems as they inevitably occur - back clipping, z-clipping, climbing above a runner, etc.
  • awareness of normal risks of sport climbing including pendulums, loose rock, judgement on the quality of the fixed protection, etc.
  • awareness of the need for supervision of young climbers at the top of the crag
  • making use of the venue as is appropriate to do so in the current weather conditions.

Please note only a selection of these skills will be discussed and/or practiced on this first club session. Hopefully this list will act as a reference for you and your children’s progression to becoming independent sport climbers.

Please bring suitable clothing, food and drink for a three-hour outdoor climbing session, based on the day's forecast. This could be everything from sun cream and bottles of water (fingers crossed!) or umbrellas and waterproofs and a flask (hopefully not!). If the weather is so bad that climbing is not possible, we will reconvene at Hotrock Climbing Wall and the instructors will deliver workshops on the necessary belaying and rope skills required for sport climbing, so that when the weather permits, you and your children will be better equipped to sport climb independently and safely.

Below is a plan for the day:

13:45 - 14:15 Registration for instruction ticket holders. Equipment allocated.

14:15 - 14:30 Safety briefing from the Instructors for all attending.

14:30 - 16:30 Instructor led sport climbing session. Loads of fun climbing and learning new skills!

16:30 - 16:45 Review of the skills practiced during the day - questions and answers.

16:45 - 17:00 Pack up and session finishes.

Limited parking space is available at the quarry, so please share lifts where possible. The quarry is open to the public so there may well be other climbers using the venue at the same time.

The British Mountaineering Council (BMC) have a selection of instructional videos on Sport Climbing that you may wish to view before the day.

If you have any questions on the format for the day, please contact Kevin Kilroy on 07513207142 or by email on kevin@mountaineering.ie
