Event description

Description

These events are a continuation of the Gilford Youth Climbing Club sessions which have been running for 10 weeks during the school term at Gilford Community Centre. The Summer sessions are being subsidised and supported by Mountaineering Ireland in the aim of establishing a sustainable Youth Climbing Club, afiliated to Mountaineering Ireland and lead by a committee of interested parents.

These two Sport Climbing evenings will both take place 35 minutes drive from Gilford at Altnadue Quarry, just outside Castlewellan. The rock here is at a complimentary angle and is very well suited to climbers new to rock climbing.

Who is this for?

Families with children who would like to continue climbing over the Summer months with Gilford Youth Climbing Club or families who would simply like to give climbing a try. These events are open to any families with an interest in climbing and have purchased the required* tickets.

What is included in a ticket?

  • Sport climbing instruction from a qualified instructor, employed by Mountaineering Ireland.
  • Equipment hire - harnesses, shoes, chalk bags, belay devices and climbing ropes
  • Mountaineering Ireland Volunteers may also be along to help out with these sessions.
  • Lots of fantastic slab climbing on excellent rock with views* across the Western Mournes
  • If it decides to rain then we will climb at Hotrock climbing wall, a 5 minute drive away at Tollymore National Outdoor Centre.

*Note views not gaurunteed...

*Important Information for Parents

Parent/s must attend these sessions to supervise the behaviour of their children and are encouraged to partake in the session through climbing themselves or learning to belay. Parent/s must also purchase a ticket in order to attend. One parent may supervise a maximum of four children. For example, if there are five children in your family then two parents will have to buy tickets for each session and supervise your children for the duration of the session.

If you enjoy rock climbing outdoors then why not try indoor climbing with the Gilford Youth Climbing Club? Tickets available for this Summer here.
