Event description

Description

We are delighted to present a concert of new music for guitar duo. Taking place in the beautiful and resonant surroundings of the exhibition room in the Irish Georgian Society’s building on South William Street, this concert will feature six new works by ICC members Chris McAteer, Sinead Finnegan, Kilian O'Kelly, Daniel Reid and Susan Geaney.

Freddy Walsh is a guitarist currently based in Dublin. He holds a Master’s degree in Performance & Musicology from NUI Maynooth, and a BA in Music from Waterford I.T. In 2014, he won first place in the senior classical guitar competition in the Feis Ceoil, becoming the first WIT student to do so. He has performed throughout Ireland in such venues as the Unitarian Church, St Anne’s Church, Castalia Hall, Garter Lane, and Crescent Arts Centre Belfast. He studied under the tuition of classical guitarist Michael O’Toole and jazz guitarist Tommy Halferty.
James McDonald is a classical guitarist who graduated from Waterford Institute of Technology with a BA in Music. Under the tutelage of Michael O’Toole he was the second Waterford I.T student to be awarded first place in the Féis Ceoil Senior Classical Guitar Competition (imitation is the highest form of flattery), and was also awarded the Bridget Doolan award, both in 2017. Solo and chamber performance venues include the National Concert Hall, St Mary’s Cathedral in Limerick, and Black Abbey Church in Kilkenny.
Freddy and James have noted a dearth of guitar duo music from Ireland, and, as well as performing works by international composers, have sought exciting new works by Irish composers for two guitars. The duo recently performed in Belfast as part of Moving on Music and Contemporary Music Centre’s “Emerging Artist Programme.” They feel that the amount of guitars onstage at the moment is adequate, but not yet ideal, and as such welcome submissions from interested composers.
