St Anne’s Cathedral, Belfast | Friday April 5th | 7:30pm

Tickets: €20 (adult), €18 (concession), €10 (student) & €5 (children)

Handel’s setting of the tale of Queen Esther is one of the forgotten gems of the baroque repertoire. Irish Baroque Orchestra, in partnership with Sestina, are delighted to continue their exploration of Handel’s lesser known oratorios following the success of Theodora in 2018.

The Jewish orphan Esther becomes Queen of Persia and saves her people from massacre by the villain Haman in this compelling musical drama. Don’t miss the tale of a triumphant heroine, told in sensuous arias and stirring choruses by master storyteller George Frideric Handel.

Peter Whelan directs Irish Baroque Orchestra with the magnificent young singers of Sestina providing the minor roles and chorus throughout. Star Irish soprano, Anna Devin, performs the titular role with Spanish tenor, Jorge Navarro Colorado, returning to perform the role of King Assuerus.

Handel portrays the story with a wide array of musical tones and nuances. A large orchestra with oboe, horns, trumpet and harp enforce the heightened drama at critical points. Listen out for the reflective, and famous aria, Tune Your Harps, and the triumphant final chorus, The Lord our enemy is slain, Esther has it all.

If you attend and enjoy IBO’s Messiah performance, this is definitely not to be missed!
