Event description

Description

Through social media, edited selfies and Photoshop, a world of artifice floods our phones everyday: unrealistic and impossible standards of beauty, health and living pervade digital culture. Is the pressure to live an idealised, Instagrammable life having a permanent effect on our mental and physical health? And what can we do to stay true to ourselves? This talk which will explore both male and female body pressures will drill into the need for more education and understanding for yong people. The panel will feature Consultant Psychiatrist, Caroline Maher, along with Amanda Fitzgerald from the School of Psychology at UCD and Irish Paralympic swimmer, Ellen Keane, who was Ireland's youngest ever athlete when she swam in the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games.

This panel discussion, hosted in partnership with the Health Research Board, will examine the themes of body image, obsession and dysmorphia in the age of social media. The conversation which will be chaired by broadcaster and journalist Louise McSharry and will investigate the good and the bad side to the 'online self', exploring new innovative services around mental health and asking if the true and radical meaning of 'body positivity’ has been lost.

Panel:

Ellen Keane (Irish Paralympic swimmer)

Caroline Maher (Consultant Psychiatrist, SVUH)

Amanda Fitzgerald (Assistant Professor, UCD)

Moderator:

Louise McSharry (Broadcaster)
