About this event

Join Community Historian Brendan Matthews at Sonairte the National Ecology Centre the Ninch, Laytown, for his popular and fascinating History & Heritage Walk & Talk presented through the medium of story-telling.

The Heritage Walk will begin in the old 18th century court-yard at Sonairte, where Brendan will speak about the initial construction of the farmhouse, courtyard and associated buildings and what life was like here during the 18th & 19th centuries.

The Walk will then proceed through the wonderful Walled, Organic, Garden before making its way along the north-bank of the adjacent River Nanny. Strolling through the beautiful, magical & mystical woodland at Sonairte, there are some stunning views of the surrounding landscape including the secluded Ballygarth Castle situated on the opposite bank of the Nanny Water.

Brendan will then lead the tour up to the summit of the wooded hill where the tour will conclude at the site of the ancient Iron-Age Rath or Hillfort Settlement with a beautiful vista over the Nanny Estuary and the Irish Sea and where some fascinating tales will be recalled regarding the surrounding area and our Celtic Ancestors.
