Event description

This seminar teaches students HOW to learn and HOW to study.

The students learning journey can be a tough one.

Feedback from students (as well as parents, teachers and guidance counsellors!) is that they feel OVERWHELMED with the amount of information there is to cover in both junior and leaving cert.

I aim to reduce this overwhelm by explaining:

* How the brain works in a learning context - this gives some meaning behind why we need to change our study methods

* What we do incorrectly on an ON-GOING basis when we THINK we are studying (and why what FEELS right is often just the brain misleading us)

* The FIVE areas we can immediately improve on to bring significant results in a very short time..

Why am I so confident that these methodologies work?

1. The feedback from students, parents and teachers has been overwhelming positive, so it gives me the confidence to know that I am making a positive difference

2. I use these methods EVERY SINGLE DAY in my own day-to-day work, so I know they are effective and I also know where the pitfalls can arise

3. I am gradually using them with my own two young daughters. My wife (a primary school teacher) and I enjoy using what is now known about the brain and applying it to everyday learning.

4. Everything I present and teach is based on the science of learning - top quality, controlled and repeatable trials that have been published in peer-reviewed journals.

5. The science of learning has also been applied in the classroom in real-life scenarios to great effect, so this information is proven and reliable in mixed cohorts of students worldwide.

In addition to the seminars, I follow-up with each student with a series of 10 emails over 10 consecutive Mondays where I revisit the material I cover in the seminar, with a further explanation and some additional examples of how they can best apply this new knowledge.

These emails are an important part in reinforcing the learnings of the seminars and in reducing any possible feeling of overwhelm - the last thing we want to do is add to the mountain of information that needs to be learned by students, so this is presented in an easy to read and easy to apply manner.

The seminars take place on Staurday, February 22nd, in Treacy's Hotel , Merchant's Quay, Waterford:

The Junior Cert Cycle Seminar runs from 10am - 1pm and is designed for students in 1st, 2nd and 3rd year.

The Leaving Cert Cycle Seminar runs from 3pm - 6pm and is designed for students in 4th, 5th and 6th year.

I will cover each of the following topics in detail:

1. why learning is misunderstood

2. how we can change the way we deal with information to become an effective and efficient student.

3. how the brain tricks us when it comes to learning (re-reading and re-writing)

4. what the science shows us does work when it comes to studying effectively and efficiently

5. how to improve and develop our focus and concentration

6. the importance of clarity when it comes to learning and how we can develop this clarity

7. how to combine homework and study on a daily basis in the most efficient manner

8. how to create a plan - how to stick to it and how to adjust it when needed

9. how to use your weekends and holiday times most effectively

10. organisational skills and effective note-taking

11. why we should create great systems, and not just concentrate on goals

We also look at some problems students face such as:

Overwhelm - "how do I just get started?"

Motivation - "how do I study when I don't feel like it?"

Mindset - "I'm just not cut out for studying or for school"

I really enjoy the entire process of bringing this information to students in a fun and engaging manner, and I know that it makes a real difference in their lives and in their learning journey, not just for secondary school, but for life!
