About this event

How to Edit Fiction: A Closer Look

This course will focus primarily on story structure. It is suitable for people who took the How to Edit Fiction course run by Publishing Ireland in May 2021 and January 2022. It’s also suitable for anyone who wants to study story structure in detail. Reading will be assigned for this course: one commercial and one literary novel to be read before the course begins and then shorter readings from the theory texts may be assigned during the course.

Day 1 - Pace

We will start the course with a look at the structure. Using James Yorke’s Into the Woods as our guide, we’ll discuss the Three-Act and Five-Act structures and how and why stories operate in the way that they do.

Day 2 - Genre

We will look at how story structure operates in the different genres within fiction publishing.

Day 3 - Voice

Using James Wood’s How Fiction Works, we will look at how fiction writers use voice and point of view in their storytelling.

SPEAKER - Niamh Mulvey

Niamh Mulvey is a writer and freelance editor. She spent ten years working in-house in the UK publishing industry, in children’s fiction and adult literary fiction. She now works with individual writers as a freelance editor and writing coach.

Niamh’s work has appeared in the Irish Times, The Bookseller, The Stinging Fly, Image Magazine, Banshee and The Pool. Her short story collection Hearts and Bones will be published by Picador in 2022 and her debut novel, The Amendments, will follow in 2023. She also writes a newsletter about the money side of the publishing business called In the Read.
