Steve Cooney is well-known for his development of an influential style of guitar accompaniment to traditional Irish dance music which he developed in West Kerry, Following on from his debut solo album, Ceol Ársa Cláirsí: Tunes of the Irish Harpers for Solo Guitar, Steve has been inundated with praise, receiving Gradam TG4 composer of the year for 2021, as well as the RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Awards Lifetime Achievement in 2020.
Iarla Ó Lionáird has carved a long and unique career in music both internationally and in Ireland. From his iconic early recording of the vision song “Aisling Gheal” as a young boy to his groundbreaking recordings with Dublin’s Crash Ensemble and New York’s Alarm Will Sound, he has shown a breadth of artistic ambition that sets him apart in the Irish Music fraternity.
His voice has graced the silver screen also, with film credits extending from “The Gangs of New York” to “Hotel Rwanda” and most recently as featured singer in the film “Brooklyn” starring Saoirse Ronan. He is the vocalist with the critically acclaimed Irish/American band “The Gloaming.”
Dermot Byrne is one of Ireland’s most outstanding traditional accordion players. For many years a member of Altan, Dermot performed, recorded and toured extensively with the group along with artists like Donal Lunny, Steve Cooney and Stephane Grapelli, bringing the beauty and joy of traditional Irish music to audiences all over the world. In other collaborations, he has performed previously with KGB, Frankie Gavin, Sharon Shannon, and The Stunning along with many other outstanding Irish and international musicians. For his contribution to Irish music, Dermot was chosen as TG4’s Traditional Musician of the Year 2013.
This concert also celebrates the release of Byrne and Cooney's duo album "Donegal Melodeon', which will be officially launched on the night before the concert.
