Event description

Description

Care Alliance Ireland is the Irish partner in the Empowering Professionals to Support Young Carers (EPYC) project and we are delighted to invite you to a seminar on young carers.

Young carers and young adult carers are people between the ages of 13 and 25 years who are providing care for a parent, sibling, friend or other close relation who has an illness or disability which may include mental illness or a problem with substance misuse. Young carers provide support in their family by helping with taking on extra, usually adult, responsibilities including dispensing medication, feeding, personal care, dressing, or making sure the bills have been paid. The level of care provided may vary depending on the family dynamic and the needs of the person being cared for.

They may also help the family in other ways, like looking after other brothers and sisters, shopping for food, doing extra washing, or preparing dinner.

This seminar will discuss the ways in which young carers in Ireland are identified and supported in the additional responsibilities they take on. We will also launch a snapshot report on the perceptions of young carers of the services and supports available to them. For more information about young carers and this event, please click here.

Speakers will include:

Denise Dunne, Project Co-ordinator EPYC: An EPYC Adventure: the challenges and successes of EPYC in Ireland

Lorraine O'Neill, City of Dublin Education and Training Board: Supporting young carers in a school setting

Mary Forde, UCD: Young carers at third level

Other speakers to be confirmed

The seminar will be followed by a light lunch and time for networking.

EPYC is a European project of six partners across five countries – Ireland, Scotland, Austria, Germany and Italy. The aim of EPYC is to improve knowledge and understanding of young carers among professionals and youth leaders who work with and around young people and who may encounter young carers. More information about EPYC can be found on the website – www.ep-yc.org.

EPYC is funded by the Erasmus+ programme of the EU.
