Event description

Description

Stephen Loughman's paintings take as their starting points certain stilled images from the repertoire of science fiction and horror films, freezing what would have passed before our eyes in 1/24th of a second into something that invites a longer look, filtered through memory Loughman re-casts "disposable" images into a new context that haunts the viewer and reminds us that the real lost planet is Earth and the real alien viewpoint is our own.

A number of works in his current exhibition at Temple Bar Gallery + Studios were triggered by the sixties film adaptation of Ray Bradbury's book The Illustrated Man. In a public conversation to accompany the exhibition, Stephen Loughman and the writer and filmmaker Stephen Walsh will discuss the artist's life-long love of the cinema and how certain single images, distilled from the billions of frames that have passed before his eyes, have become the seed-bed of his work and practice. They'll also talk about the abiding power of this so-called "pulp" imagery and the way it can speak to us so deeply, rhyming with our emotional and psychological experience of life on the crumbling rock upon which we're currently hurtling across the universe, destination unknown.
