Event description

Description

IMPROVING COMMUNICATIONS AND SOLVING BEHAVIOUR CHALLENGES FOR INDIVIDUALS ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM WORKSHOP IS CO-HOSTED BY ASFAN AND PRISM

COMMUNICATION is one of the primary areas of difficulty for persons who experience autism.

The difficulty is pervasive, affecting a wide range of skills including the ability to:

  • Understand social communication
  • Understand environmental cues
  • Follow directions
  • Perform self-management or organisational tasks
  • Develop effective expressive communication

COMMUNICATION - is more complex than “just speech”. It involves multiple skills including establishing attention, taking in information, interpreting that information, remembering past information and formulating a response.

Communication difficulties can be a “root cause” for many behaviour problems. When analysing situations where behaviour problems occur, it becomes obvious that many of them are the result of the individual on the autism spectrum not understanding what is going on in their life.

UPON COMPLETION OF THIS WORKSHOP - Participants will have a better understanding of the type of strategies to use to improve communications and solve behavioral challenges. These STRATEGIES are practical, relevant and evidence-based and are suitable for use in a range of environments for individuals of any age.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND THIS WORKSHOP - This workshop is a must for anyone who lives or works with an individual on the autism spectrum.

WORKSHOP PRESENTER - Kevin Baskerville is the manager of Leicestershire Autism Outreach Service (AOS); he is an educator and consultant with more than 30 years experience supporting individuals on the spectrum, their families and the people who support them. Throughout the workshop, personal insights will be provided and Kevin will incorporate information from young people on the spectrum to help shape and inform practice. Kevin likes to use a variety of multimedia approaches; his workshops are a role-play free-zone!!!
