Description

Pavee Point Traveller and Roma Centre is hosting a seminar in St Andrews Resource Centre on the 13th of November.

The seminar aims to;

  • Promote increased engagement with Travellers, Traveller organisations and Addiction/State Agencies

  • Explore examples of positive work and share models of good practice

  • Collectively identify key recommendations in relation to Traveller engagement with substance misuse services

  • Prepare for the National Drug Strategy three year review in 2020

Purpose of the event;

The seminar will provide a space to explore current issues relating to the nature and context of substance misuse in the Traveller community, examine barriers to accessing services, and explore good practice responses with the overall goal of increasing engagement.

There will be inputs from keynote speakers on:

  • The nature and context of substance misuse in the Traveller community

  • Traveller participation and engagement in relevant fora

  • Traveller substance misuse trends and engagement with services

  • Trauma and the Traveller community - with a special focus on intergenerational and structural trauma

  • National Drug Strategy – where we are at, community development and the need to strengthen interagency partnerships at a national level

  • The Clondalkin Model - good practice in engaging with Travellers – based on local Traveller organisations and Drug and Alcohol Task Forces working in an inter-agency partnership approach

  • Good practice in engaging with ethnic minorities and new communities in both community and residential settings

Following this, there will be a brief round table discussion to A) identify possible areas of future collective work and B) prepare for Traveller participation in the 3 year review of the National Drug Strategy in 2020 to achieve better outcomes for Travellers.
