Description

Inishbofin Island is looking forward to the annual Arts Festival over the May Bank Holiday Weekend, May 4th to 6th 2018. The 2018 festival will welcome old friends and new to the island!

ART EXHIBITION FOR FESTIVAL DURATION

Over the course of the festival there will be an exhibition on permanent display in the Community Centre. This year work from artists Yvonne King and Heather Greer will be on display. More artists have been scheduled but not yet confirmed so watch this space!

FRIDAY

Johnny Brady: We are super excited to welcome Johnny Brady to Inishbofin for the first time! Johnny Brady has one of the most distinctive voices in modern country music. Known for his powerful vocals, energetic performances and charismatic personality, Johnny has a unique sound and is continually pushing the boundaries in a new generation of Irish country music artists.

Before Johnny takes to the stage Lol Hardiman will have an island lauch of his CD 'Drive By Preacher'. 'Drive By Preacher' is Lol's first solo album, an eclectic collection of original songs encompassing great lyrical observation alongside deft arrangements – a musical feast to touch the heart and get the feet tapping.

SATURDAY

Workshops and Walks: Saturday morning will be a busy one for those interested in doing some workshops! Slots are yet to be allocated but there will be craft and music workshops or if those don't tickle your fancy get out into the fresh air and blow away those cobwebs on a guided walk with local island historian and archaelogist, Tommy Burke.

Hello Delia Murphy: On Saturday afternoon we can all sit back and be enthralled by the songs and story of the iconic Delia Murphy sung in her own unique style. ‘Hello Delia Murphy’ is a one woman-show by Murphy’s niece, Carmen Cullen. Roll back the years with ‘The Spinning Wheel’ and other much-loved songs and a dramatised reading as part of the show. Delia Murphy made an enormous impact on the Irish entertainment scene. She was a unique personality onstage and off and is credited with laying the groundwork for the Irish Folk-Revival.

Moon Looks On: Stephen Gormley has been visiting Bofin for years and was a regular at our early Off the Rock gigs in Galway (until he headed to Dublin). Coming back to the island with his band, Moon Looks On we are in for a great concert on Saturday night, a high energy gig which fuses both modern contemporary folk and soul. The bones of Moon Looks On music is built around songs told as stories and then layered on a pulsating bass and drums backline - all of it weaved together with the harmonically and melodically rich sound of violin and piano playing counterpoint to one another.

SUNDAY

The Voice Squad: On Sunday afternoon the amazing trio 'The Voice Squad' will showcase the amazing acoustics of St Colman's Church in a not to be missed gig. he Voice Squad are a traditional Irish singing group. They have recorded three albums and have toured Ireland, the UK and the US.

Though group singing, especially in harmony, is not part of the Irish music tradition, The Voice Squad have a considerable repertoire of Irish traditional songs and have always sung unaccompanied.

Landmark: After the Church make your way to the community centre to watch the film Landmark that was made on Inishbofin.

Cherish The Ladies: “It is simply impossible to imagine an audience that wouldn’t enjoy what they do,” says the Boston Globe speaking of Cherish the Ladies, the long-running, Grammy-nominated, Irish-American super group that formed in New York City in 1985 to celebrate the rise of women in what had been a male-dominated Irish music scene and has since toured the world, played the White House and the Olympics, recorded seventeen outstanding albums and won an Emmy.

Under the leadership of All-Ireland flute and whistle champion Joanie Madden these ladies create an evening that includes a spectacular blend of virtuoso instrumental talents, beautiful vocals, captivating arrangements, and stunning step dancing. Their continued success as one of the top Celtic groups in the world is due to the ensembles ability to take the best of Irish traditional music and dance and put it forth in an immensely entertaining show.

There’s loads more happening over the weekend and plenty for kids making this a real family friendly weekend! Keep an eye on this page, inishbofin.com or Inishbofin Island on Facebook for more information as we’ll update details as we confirm them!
