Event Details

The International Linguistics Olympiad is one of 12 International Science Olympiads for secondary school students, and has been held annually since 2003. Each year, teams of young linguists from around the world gather and test their minds against the world's toughest puzzles in language and linguistics.

The 15th annual olymipad will be hosted by the ADAPT Centre for Digital Content Technology and will run from 31 July to 4 August in Dublin City University.

The competition challenges students to translate dead or expired languages into their own native language.  In past years, students have worked on everything from sign language used by monks to Sanskrit poetry.  They have translated Jaqaru, a language once spoken among indigenous tribes in the Andes, and Iatmül, a language with only 8,400 native speakers.

Closing Ceremony

We would like to invite you to attend the closing ceremony of the 15th International Linguistics Olympiad on August 4th at 2pm in the Helix. The ADAPT Centre will congratulate 45 international teams, consisting of 180 students from 30 countries for their participation in the competition, and will be announcing the winners in each category.
