Event description
iSHCamp is aimed at Early Career Researchers and anyone with an enthusiasm for learning Digital Spatial Humanities tools and techniques

About this Event

The International Spatial Humanities Sprint Camp (iSHCamp) will be held in the Trinity Long Room Hub, Trinity College Dublin, on 24-26 October 2019.

The event is aimed primarily at Early Career Researchers, but is also open to anyone else who wishes to learn the basics of Spatial Humanities techniques and tools such as GIS, Digital Mapping and Online Digital Exhibitions. Participants will receive tuition in morning sessions from experts in the field, and in the afternoon session will engage in groupwork to put their learning into practice, which will ultimately form an open online publication that they can add to their portfolio.

Participants will work on mini-projects in three main themes, using previously undigitised maps from the Glucksman Map Library in Trinity College Dublin. The three themes for groupwork are:

  • Developing Trinity

How the environment has shaped, and been shaped by, Trinity College campus? Participants will look at historical maps of TCD campus and Dublin, and develop an exhibition that tells a story of the relationship between the changing city landscape and the University.

  • Performing Trinity

How has Trinity been represented in film, TV and literature? What locations around the campus and its environs have been used in productions? Which have appeared in literature, and how are the spaces represented? Participants in this group will produce an exhibition that showcases and opens up key locations around campus, using historical and contemporary maps.

  • Centennial Trinity

What part has Trinity played in historical events from the 20th and 21st Centuries? Using historical and contemporary maps, participants in this group will link historical digital items from the past 100 years, showing Trinity both played its part in, and was influenced by important events in Irish, European and World history

Registration

The fee for the workshop is EU45. This has been kept as low as possible to cover catering and minor admin costs. The event as a whole is funded by the Irish Research Council.

You can register for the event via this Eventbrite, after which you will be sent an email directing you to a secure website for payment. Your registration will only be confirmed once payment is received. Payment must be received within 7 days of completing this form, and before Saturday 13th October. Any unpaid registrations will be cancelled and released to people on the waiting list.

Steps for registration are:

  1. Fill in the registration form via this Eventbrite page
  2. You will receive an email with instructions on how to pay via PayPal. This is a safe secure way to pay, and accepts most major credit or debit cards. You must pay within 7 days of completing step 1.
  3. Keep yourself updated on the iSHCamp event via https://ishcamp.home.blog

Please note - Travel Bursary recipients have a fee waiver, and will not be required to complete step 2, unless they wish to buy a ticket to the Social Event (see below).

iSHCamp Social Event

On the evening of Fri 25th October, we will host a 'Pizza Party' at The Yarn on Liffey St Lower, just 10 minutes walk from TCD campus. The cost of this social event is EU27, and covers food (including pizza, antipasti and dessert) and a welcome drink. This will be a great opportunity to enjoy Dublin nightlife in the centre of the city, and unwind with fellow participants. Please note, while every effort will be made to cater for dietary requirements, unfortunately the pizza cannot be made gluten free. But we've been assured you won't go hungry!

Tickets for this social event must be bought in advance, and you can add it to your registration fee. If you have already registered, and want to buy a ticket, email ishcampinfo@gmail.com for details of how to pay.

Refunds

Registration and/or social event refunds will only be accepted up to Friday 18th October. Unfortunately we cannot offer refunds after this date. Requests for refunds must be sent via email to ishcampinfo@gmail.com. If you want to offer your place in the workshop or social event to someone else, that is not a problem, but we do not accept responsibility for finding that person! Furthermore, we must have their name by Weds 23rd October at the latest.
