Event description
Explore what the feminine means this IWD in a special creative arts workshop designed for both men and women

About this Event

What exactly is the feminine? In this special workshop as part of International Women’s Day 2020, join Dublin creative coaching duo The Reluctant Gurus as we explore what it means to be feminine in the 21st century through a series of creative and crafting exercises based on depictions of the feminine through time. First, we’ll unravel and discuss a few depictions and understandings of what it meant to be feminine at different points in history and culture, before bringing some of these depictions to life through a series of creative exercises.

Taking inspiration from, for example, figurative carvings of Sheela na gigs, representations of Celtic feminine ideals such as the Mother, Maiden and Crone, and Irish saints such as St. Brigid, we’ll explore the history of the feminine in Ireland and abroad, and create our own drawings, carvings, symbols and depictions of what the feminine might mean to us in the 21st century.

What to expect

As part of this workshop, we’ll be exploring a blend of the below:

  • Depictions of the feminine through time, and creative exercises such as automatic writing and drawing to interact with these depictions
  • Creative visualisation and meditation exercises to get in touch with our own inner feminine and ideas about what the feminine is to us personally
  • Exercises to access, cultivate and manifest the feminine in our lives more generally such as symbol creation, mantras and movement
  • Art and crafts exercises to produce some finished pieces to take home, such as St. Brigid’s crosses, mini-representational figures, drawings and poetry, etc.
  • Creating a group mural depicting what femininity means to us

This workshop is aimed to be a fun and joyous celebration of the various understandings of what it means to be feminine in the 21st century. Suitable for everyone - from women and men, to experienced artists and those who have never picked up a paintbrush - we’ll guide you through each step of the process finishing in a lovely and colourful array of art and crafts to take home with you.
