Introduction to citations metrics – what you need to know as a researcher
Demonstrating impact is a key component of academic promotion. Academic Research Offices, employers, and funding agencies are increasingly turning to citation metrics as indicators of academic contribution, productivity, and impact. For authors journal metrics can be helpful in identifying suitable publication outlets.
But what do these metrics mean and where are they appropriate to use (and where not)? This introductory, interactive workshop will highlight some key messages for researchers to consider when looking at citation metrics.
At the end of the session you will be able to:
• Compare some of the most used research impact metrics
• Select metrics that are of value to your research
• Explain the limitations of research metrics
The session will happen on MS Teams from 10 am to 12 pm including a break.
The meeting link will be emailed to attendees in advance. We will also use the interactive software Menti. It will be useful if you have a second device such as a tablet or a smartphone handy at the workshop.
We will use the resources:
- Scopus: https://www.scopus.com
- Google Scholar: https://scholar.google.com/citations
Please familiarise yourself briefly with both tools.
